Poppy Seed Breadsticks (Paluchy z Makiem)

Soft, fluffy, lightly sweet poppy seed breadsticks made with honey, just like the ones I loved as a kid in Poland. Easy yeast dough, ready in about 2 hours.

Just like Komarka, where I got this recipe, I have childhood memories connected with these breadsticks (paluchy). I loved dunking them in sweet creamy homogenized cheese and eating them bit by bit. I still buy them whenever I'm in Poland on vacation, but here I really miss them. They are very tasty, tender, fluffy, lightly sweet, and the poppy seeds add so much charm.

I have to admit I made them in a bit of a hurry, because it was already very late and the kids needed something for breakfast at preschool. Because of that they came out much bigger than they should have been, more like poppy seed loaves. No matter how big, they turned out very tasty!

I'm quoting Komarka, because I didn't change anything.

Ingredients:

  • 500 g flour
  • 2 tbsp soft butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 40 g poppy seeds
  • 1.5 tsp dry yeast
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 150 ml milk
  • 125 ml water
  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp milk (for brushing)

Sift the flour into a bowl, add the butter, and work it in until the mixture resembles crumble topping. Add the salt, poppy seeds and yeast. Warm the milk with the water and honey, and pour it, still warm, into the remaining ingredients. Knead a soft, elastic dough. Cover and set aside in a warm place until doubled in volume (about 1 hour).
Shape the risen dough into rolls, place them on a baking sheet and leave them for 15 minutes, until they rise slightly. Brush the tops with the egg mixed with the milk and sprinkle poppy seeds on top. Bake in an oven preheated to 200°C (390°F) for about 15 minutes, until nicely browned.

Enjoy!

So pretty. Unfortunately I don't have any memories connected to these paluchy, but I'd be happy to bake them. They look incredibly delicious the way you made them :)

I really like paluchy like these too, and I've never made them myself, so I need to make up for that oversight. They look so tasty!
