We had such a beautiful weekend. Wonderful weather, temperatures well over 20°C, wonderful views, happy kids and tasty food in the form of a picnic wrap and delicious cookies. We love weekend trips like this, especially when we get to discover areas we haven't seen before. On Saturday we went to Opel Zoo, and the girls fell in love with it right away. Yesterday's trip, on the other hand, was a bit more for us, though the kids liked it a lot too. Our destination was Lorelei.

Quoting from http://www.loreley-info.com/pol.php

“Lorelei is a huge rock rising about 132 meters above sea level in the World Heritage/Welterbe Oberes Mittelrheintal near “St. Goarshausen”. From the top of the mountain you can admire “St. Goarshausen” with “Burg Katz” and, nearby, “St. Goar” with “Burg Rheinfels”. The landscape enchants the tourists who come to Lorelei.
The Rhine, where the Lorelei rock stands, is 25 meters deep and 113 meters wide at this point. Because the Rhine is at its narrowest and deepest here, this area is counted as the most dangerous spot in the Oberes Mittelrheintal World Heritage Site. Here, and along the entire route from “Oberwesel” to “St. Goarshausen”, approaching ships are flagged by light signals called “Wahrschau”.”

“The poet “Clemens Brentano” wrote a romantic ballad titled “Loreley” in 1801. The ballad tells of a lovely maiden from “Bacharach” who was betrayed by her beloved and therefore decided to take her own life. However, a bishop, who was enchanted by her beauty, decided to take her to a convent. On the way to the convent she stopped at the rock to look one last time at her beloved's castle. Thinking she had spotted his figure moving away, she threw herself, desperate, into the waters of the Rhine. In his Rhine fairy tale, Brentano changed the story. In 1810 he presents “Loreley” (Lorelei) as an unhappy woman, Lurley, who, sitting on the rock and combing her golden hair, bewitches men who cannot resist her charms.”

I can't leave out the vineyards all around the area. You see them everywhere, and they practically beg you to come back at harvest time and visit the nearby wineries.

During the trip we organized a little picnic. The weather was so beautiful that we couldn't say no to it. Our main treat was a tortilla wrap in two versions. It's tasty, quick and no trouble at a picnic lunch. It's also perfect for work or for a light lunch or dinner.

If you can't get ajvar, you can use, for example, tomato pesto. You can also make your own ajvar from blended roasted peppers (peeled), onion, olive oil and garlic. You can also add oil-packed dried tomatoes and roasted eggplant to it, and season it with lemon juice, salt, pepper and chili.

For a kids' version you can use hot dogs instead of meat.

Instructions - Picnic Wrap:

Wash the chicken breasts, pat them dry and cut them into very thin strips, like for gyros. Heat the oil in a pan with the chopped garlic and spices. Add the meat and fry it. Transfer it from the pan and let it cool.

Mix the twaróg with the pepper paste and a little crème fraîche (you can skip it), then season with salt and pepper. Wash the scallions and carrots and cut them into thin strips.

Spread each tortilla quite generously with the paste (I like my wraps on the moister side, so I don't skimp on the paste), then arrange the lettuce leaves, carrot, scallions and pieces of meat on top and roll up the wraps. For the picnic version I roll them much like gołąbki (Polish stuffed cabbage rolls), that is, first I fold in the left and right sides slightly, and then I roll up the tortilla fairly tightly, starting from the unfolded edge. Eat cold right away, or wrap in a napkin and take along on a picnic.

Enjoy!
