Grandma Helga's Advent cookies
This is the last Advent cookie recipe of the year. It comes from my mother-in-law. Her mother, Grandma Helga, created it, and it has been in their family for years. Every year my mother-in-law bakes these cookies, now together with Louisa and Gabriela, and decorates them with all kinds of sprinkles. This year, of course, was no different.
The dough can be made a day ahead. You can also add marzipan to it.
Grandma Helga's Advent cookies - in the making
Ingredients:
- 1 kg flour
- 1 block butter (250 g)
- 2 ½ cups sugar
- 1 packet baking powder (15 g)
- 2 packets vanilla sugar
- 1 lemon flavoring oil
- 1 egg
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 cup (200 ml) sour cream (possibly more)
Mix all the ingredients together and knead into a dough. If it seems too dry, you can add more sour cream. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and set it aside in a cool place for a few hours. Roll it out into a thin sheet and cut out cookies. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for about 5 minutes. These cookies don't brown quickly, so you have to keep an eye on the baking time. Alternatively, you can check whether they're done by pressing one with your finger. If it's soft, it means they should be done already.
