Miętówka (Homemade Mint Liqueur)

Miętówka is an easy homemade mint liqueur for the impatient and the lazy: fresh mint, sugar, lemon zest and vodka, ready to drink in just 14 days.

Digg Digg

I wasn't going to publish this recipe this year, because I really had nothing left to photograph, but a few of you were so enthusiastic that I'm doing it after all.

This homemade liqueur is perfect for the impatient and the lazy. Compared to other liqueurs, like strawberry or elderflower, you don't have to wait long before you can enjoy a glass, and there's not much work involved. On top of that, mint is almost everywhere, and for a long time, too. The best choice here is the leaves of young mint that hasn't flowered yet. If you still have some like that somewhere and you like a little glass of refreshing liqueur now and then, you have to try it!

This recipe has been going around in my family for at least several years, and everyone is proud of their own version, which of course is the best and tastiest. I suspect the differences in flavor come from the type of mint used. Mine has a strong flavor and thick, sturdy leaves. The liqueur tastes intensely minty and refreshing.

Ingredients:

  • 2 big handfuls of mint leaves
  • ½ cup sugar
  • zest of ½ lemon
  • ½ liter good vodka

Tear the mint leaves and put them in a pot. Cover with the sugar, pour 2 tbsp water over it, and bring to a gentle boil until the mint releases its juices. Add the lemon zest, stir, and set aside to cool. Pour into a dark bottle or jar, add the vodka, and let it sit for 14 days. Strain and it's ready to drink.

Additional information:

If you don't have a dark bottle, keep the liqueur in a dark place.

Enjoy!

Very interesting idea. I love mint, not so much alcohol – but I'm sure I'd like your recipe :)

    Best wishes :)

Well, I have a really simple version – pour spirits over the mint leaves and leave them for a week in a dark place. After a week, strain it, add a cooled syrup made of water and sugar (to taste), and it's ready to drink.

P.S. And one more thing: the spirits color the leaves, so after 7 days the liqueur is a beautiful green. We control the strength of the liqueur with the syrup – meaning the amount of water and sugar. Personally, I prefer sweet mint liqueur. It's delicious afterwards with ice and lemon. I always make extra because once you throw out the leaves, it can easily age for even a year. And as we know, we only have fresh mint in season. P.P.S. Sorry sis for posting my own recipe :)
