## Instructions

Placek po węgiersku (a potato pancake topped with goulash, "Hungarian-style") reminds me of vacations at the Polish seaside. When I'd had enough of fish, that was exactly what I ordered. It was cheap and filling. It's "just" a pancake, but after a meal like that, I didn't have to think about food for a long time.

This version isn't quite like the vacation one, because "my" placek po węgiersku is much richer, spicier and tastier, but the "overall" flavor is the same. On top of that, it's perfect for winter dinners, because the chili really warms you up. Of course, you can also skip the chili for a milder dish, or add more of it.

The inspiration for this recipe was a placek po węgiersku recipe from the website [gotujmy.pl](http://www.gotujmy.pl/). Unfortunately, I can't find the original recipe anymore, and my printout doesn't list the author.

Hungarian-style potato pancake

**Ingredients:** (for about 2-3 pancakes, depending on the size of your skillet and how hungry you are)

Goulash:

* 500 g pork (e.g. shoulder, neck)
* 2 onions
* 1 red bell pepper
* 1 yellow bell pepper
* half a peperoni pepper
* 2 pickled cucumbers
* 1 heaping tsp to 1 tbsp tomato paste
* about 2 tbsp sour cream or plain yogurt
* salt
* pepper
* hot and sweet paprika
* ½ tsp marjoram
* ½ tsp basil
* ½ tsp oregano
* oil for frying

For the pancakes:

* 1 egg
* 500 g potatoes
* ½ onion
* 1-2 tbsp flour
* oil for frying

Cut the meat into fairly small pieces, as for goulash (cubed). Dice the onions, bell peppers and pickled cucumbers. Brown the meat in oil, add the onions, season with salt and pepper, and pour in a cup of water. Simmer, covered.

Meanwhile, prepare the pancake batter. Peel the potatoes and grate them finely into a pulp. Pour off the liquid that collects. Peel the onion, cut it into a very fine dice, and add it to the potatoes along with the egg. Add the flour and mix.

Now you can go back to the goulash. When the meat is tender, add the bell peppers and pickled cucumbers. Mix the sour cream with the tomato paste and pour it into the simmering meat. Season with the spices from the list and simmer for about 5 more minutes.

In a skillet, fry one large potato pancake, one that covers the whole bottom of the pan. Slide it onto a plate, spoon the finished goulash on top, fold the pancake in half and drizzle with a little sauce. Serve right away.

Enjoy!

  You made me so hungry! Even though it's so early in the morning, I could totally eat it…
  I don't know why, but in my family and in my town it's called Bytom-style placek :P
  Best wishes, and I'm looking forward to more delicious recipes :)

    Tuptuś, I also know this dish as bandit-style placek and Gypsy-style placek. Whatever you call it, it's all the same. What matters is that it's good :)

  I don't know what it is about potato pancakes, just a plain potato turned into something with an amazing taste. And with the sauce, I don't think anybody would turn down such goodness. I also know it as Hungarian-style placek. Greetings, Basia

  Some time ago I suddenly craved Hungarian-style/bandit-style placek so badly that I even cooked up a goulash just right for it! I love these flavors :)
  Best wishes, Flowerek!

  Whatever you call this placek doesn't matter, but it's worth making because it's good and sooo filling.

  An easy to make, very tasty and filling dinner.
  The Hungarian version of goulash is pretty spicy and might be too hot for kids. But you can always set a little aside before adding the peppers :)
