- a few juniper berries

**Also:**

- 600 g onions
- 200 g dried California prunes

- about 100 g tomato paste (a small jar)
- a large amount of marjoram (preferably fresh)
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 bay leaf
- salt
- pepper

## Instructions

After the [Chocolate Weekend](http://atinabc.blox.pl/2011/01/Zaproszenie-na-Czekoladowy-Weekend.html) it's time for... herring.

My Mom made this herring for Christmas. But this herring salad is just as good every day, with **bread, for example [oatmeal bread](https://flowers-recipes.com/oatmeal-bread/)**, or as a snack for a get-together, so it's a recipe worth remembering.

Unfortunately, I don't know who came up with the recipe, but this herring, like any good herring, is absolutely yum.

Note: For herring salads I usually use fillets that are already filleted and soaked. If you use other herring, you need to soak it well to get rid of the salt.

Kashubian-style herring

**Instructions:**

For the marinade, bring the vinegar and water to a boil, then add the sugar, the onion cut into rings, and the spices. Boil for a moment and let cool, then add the herring cut into bite-size pieces and let it soak for at least half an hour.

Peel the onions and cut them into half-rings. Coarsely chop the prunes. Dice the pickles. Sauté the onions in the oil, adding a few tablespoons of water as they cook. Add the bay leaf, prunes, pickles, pepper and salt, and finally the marjoram. Simmer for a little while, add the tomato paste, stir, and let cool. Mix with the herring taken out of the marinade and serve.

Enjoy!

Interesting herring recipe. I honestly don't even know anymore which herring is the real Kashubian-style one, because I've seen so many variations and every one of them was delicious. I think the one I liked best was the recipe with … sprats added ;)
  Best wishes

Adding sprats… interesting :) I think it's like with most recipes: as many families, as many recipes.

Oh, herring! My favorite! I'll definitely try it :)
  Best wishes!

Herring, strange as it may seem, looks to me like a pretty controversial little fish. Not everyone likes it, though I happen to be one of those who love it with sour cream ;-) This one looks super tasty too!

Until now I've only had herring in oil, but I really like this recipe.

Is the herring fillet in the recipe supposed to be herring in oil, in vinegar, or just regular fresh fillet? Warm regards :)

Regular fresh fillet, but soaked so it's not too salty. Best wishes to you too, and I wish you a Merry Christmas :)
