“Where Did My Dates Go?

I only stepped out of the house for a moment!
I stepped out of the house, came back in a while,
and look – oh my! No dates in sight!

Where did my dates go?
Maybe the terrible gorillas ate them?
They burst into the house with a awful roar,
and shamelessly ate my dates!

And those gorillas, where did they go?
Did a little bunny chase them away?
He came flying in a yellow airplane
and gave those gorillas a mighty beating!

And that bunny? Where did he hide?
Maybe a cow met him in the forest
and married him, and last Friday
gave birth to six little cow-bunnies?

And where is that cow? Who will tell me?
Is she in Kraków? Or in Ozorków?
Supposedly the wolves saw her recently
buying hairpins for her hair.

Wolves? Sorry, those were elephants!
One smallish, in a golden crown,
the other shaggy and freckled,
who just kept hanging on the phone!

Who was he calling? Maybe the jackdaw?
But all she has in her head is earwigs!
Not only is she deaf and a liar,
she also has four retakes at school!

In what? I don't know! I'll ask the weasel,
the one who walks around in a denim skirt
and chews gum, and whose uncle
always buys dates for me!

So where are my dates, after all?
Did the terrible gorillas eat them?
Little bunnies? Black guinea fowl?
Wolves, butterflies or crocodiles?

And you? Confess, my dears –
didn't you happen to pass by there?
Isn't it one of your clever pranks
that those dates evaporated?

No?
Then let each of you tell me,
why is a palm tree growing on his head?”

Dates Stuffed with Blue Cheese

Forgive me, I couldn't help it, but lately our whole family loves this poem. My kids ask me to read it to them every night, and they kept asking what dates taste like.

Of course they're sweet and sticky. And what can you use them for? Eating instead of candy, which is what I've been enjoying lately. But they've come in handy in another role too, as a snack to serve with wine, although that's not for kids anymore ;)

And how do you use dates?

Dates stuffed with blue cheese turned out to be a great and lightning-fast addition to a wine night, which I didn't expect from them. I once caught a photo of them in some magazine or on the internet and had to try it. M. says they're a bit too sweet, but I don't have that problem with them :) They taste good, and that's that. And no palm tree has grown on my head ;)

**Directions - Dates Stuffed with Blue Cheese:**

Open the dates up slightly and press pieces of cheese into them. Garnish with a basil leaf and serve.

Enjoy!

They look so elegant! I also thought they'd go well with wine. :) Really great idea!

Beautiful little poem, and the dates are probably tasty too
