I think everybody knows coffee. Many of us like it, or can't even live without it.

Coffee comes from the coffee plant. Its main species are arabica and robusta. In the past, coffee was grown, roasted, ground and drunk as mocha by the Turks. Today the whole world enjoys espresso, cappuccino, latte macchiato, Irish coffee and many other variations of coffee.

coffee

There are many reasons why we can enjoy coffee with a clear conscience. Coffee is a drink that, in "normal" amounts, is not harmful to your health. One of the nicest things about drinking coffee is its positive effect on our well-being. You don't need any scientific studies to see that. Just imagine... when you take a little coffee break, both your body and your mind get to rest. It's a moment to forget about stress. Sharing a coffee together also has a positive effect on how we communicate with each other. There is nothing more relaxing than a nice chat with friends over a mug of coffee. I'm sure each of us knows that pleasant feeling at the thought of a "cuppa." So why not have one more?

There are scientific studies (more or less representative) on the effects of coffee on the human body. According to them:

- caffeine has a stimulating effect. Even a single cup of coffee wakes you up and helps you concentrate.

- coffee can also be counted toward the recommended amount of fluids to drink during the day.

- coffee stimulates the secretion of stomach acid and bile, so it's a good idea to have a cup right after a meal, "to help digestion." Although some people get heartburn from coffee, when drunk in reasonable amounts it has no negative effect on the stomach.

- current research is looking into the antioxidants contained in coffee. They are said to flush harmful substances out of the body.

- there are studies confirming that some substances in coffee protect against cancer. Among others, it should protect against kidney, bladder and colon cancer. What's more, the right amount of coffee a day should protect women against breast cancer. Coffee stimulates the release of dopamine, which should inhibit the development of Parkinson's disease.

- some studies confirm that coffee reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, it is not yet known what exactly in coffee has this effect.

- coffee as a drink is not addictive. What can be addictive is the caffeine it contains. Possible withdrawal symptoms are fatigue and headaches, which usually go away after a few days.

- coffee is also used in cosmetics. As a scrub, it firms and cleanses the skin. Coffee grounds are also great for cleaning dirty hands.

So, my dears, sit down at the table with friends, family or coworkers and enjoy a cup of your favorite coffee. Or maybe you'd rather make some delicious dessert?
